Nomination and Selection Process

Fred Mitchell Award Watch List is released based on prior season results, current season expectations, media reports, information from collegiate sports information directors and coaches, commitment to community service and Selection Committee evaluation. All Division II and III place-kickers are eligible to receive the Award whether or not they are on the preseason Watch List.
September to November

Performance of all eligible place-kickers is monitored throughout the college football season based on media reports and information provided by collegiate athletic departments.
- Public recognition is provided monthly to eligible place-kickers that have performed at an extraordinary level on the football field. Special recognition is also given to place-kickers that have differentiated themselves by proactively volunteering in their local community. Publicity of this monthly recognition will be provided to media in large markets and in the markets of the place-kickers receiving the monthly honors.
December
- Award nominations are due from colleges by December 1 for consideration by the Selection Committee.
- Selection Committee vote in early December. Winner contacted by Fred Mitchell by December 15, followed by national press release. Timing coincides with Division II and III National Championship games in mid-December.
February
- Award is presented at the annual National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony. A college tuition scholarship is presented to the college of the Award recipient. Scholarship funds are received from corporate and individual donations and nominal financial support provided by the Selection Committee.
